How To Store Fresh Herbs

My poor wilted mint!

My poor wilted mint!

If you are wondering how to store fresh herbs so what happened to my mint the day before my Kentucky Derby Theme Party does not happen to you, listen up.

I have since learned that there are two methods that work well when storing fresh herbs.

1.) As soon as you get your herbs home from the store or pick them from your garden, wrap them in a SLIGHTLY DAMPENED paper towel, place them in a LOOSE plastic bag and store them in your refrigerator. Crispers are not the best place for them because it is hard to regulate how cold they get. Just keep them in the main part of the refrigerator.

2.) The second method for how to store fresh herbs is to snip the stems so they are fresh and place the herbs upright in a glass filled with a couple inches of water. Do not submerge the leaves. Then place a LOOSE bag over the upright glass (do not seal the bag) and stand the bag-covered glass upright in the main part of your refrigerator.

I wish I had learned how to store mint before I bought it. Now, my Kentucky Derby party is tomorrow and I have to run around town looking for more so I can serve Mint Juleps.

I like the first method for storing the herbs. Do you have any idea of how to store fruits as well so that they can be enjoyed for a longer period of time /

Storing Fresh Veggies
by: Anonymous

I always put my vegetables in aplastic bag with a DRY paper towel. Moisture is what causes food to spoil quickly. I do the same thing with my green salads I lay a paper towel over the top before I put it in the refrigerator...lasts forever and stays fresh.

TPQ Comment: Thanks for commenting. Luckily, I found more mint the day before my party, followed the instructions of using a slightly damp towel and the leaves are still fresh today (3 days later).

When trying to figure out how to store fresh herbs and veggies, it is probably different depending on what you have. I use dry paper towel with lettuce and it works perfectly.
